Snowboard Insurance

A helicopter rescue in the Alps can cost between 2,000 and over 10,000 euros. A hospital stay abroad can run much higher. Insurance is not optional — it is part of preparing for every day on snow.

Why insurance is essential

Snowboarding — especially freeride and park riding — carries real injury risk. Costs without cover can be devastating:

  • Mountain rescue and helicopter: 1,500-8,000 EUR in Italy, much more abroad
  • Hospitalisation: covered by the Italian national health system, but abroad it can cost tens of thousands
  • Repatriation: an air-ambulance repatriation can exceed 20,000 EUR
  • Third-party liability: if you injure another skier, compensation claims can be very high

Types of cover for snow sports

Mountain rescue insurance

Covers the cost of rescue in a mountain accident, including helicopter transport. Some options:

  • CAI (Club Alpino Italiano): the CAI membership card includes mountain rescue cover in Italy. Very affordable (annual card approximately 50-80 EUR).
  • CNSAS: rescue in Italy is free by law, but transport charges may be billed. A policy covers those costs.
  • Commercial insurers: specific "snow and mountain" policies with comprehensive cover.

Travel health insurance

Essential when snowboarding abroad. Typically covers:

  • Medical and hospital expenses
  • Rescue and transport
  • Medical repatriation
  • Trip interruption for medical reasons

Always verify the policy explicitly covers winter sports and, if you ride off-piste, backcountry activities. Many standard travel policies exclude high-risk sports.

Third-party liability (RC)

Covers damage you cause to others. On-piste, civil law makes you liable for injuries to other people. Liability insurance covers:

  • Physical injury to other skiers or snowboarders
  • Material damage
  • Legal costs in the event of a dispute

Personal accident cover

Covers consequences of injuries to yourself: temporary or permanent disability, hospital daily allowance, and medical expenses. Useful if your base health insurance does not cover sports.

Where to find cover

Credit card

Many premium credit cards include travel and winter-sport cover. Check the terms of your card — you may already have basic cover if you paid for the trip with that card. Beware of geographical limits and low caps.

CAI membership

The Club Alpino Italiano card is one of the best-value options for anyone doing mountain activities in Italy. It includes mountain rescue cover and some associated off-piste policies.

Dedicated snow policies

Many insurers offer seasonal or day policies specific to winter sports. Compare cover levels and caps before choosing.

Ski-pass add-on policies

Some resorts offer add-on insurance at the time of ski-pass purchase. Evaluate whether the cover is sufficient or if you need a separate policy.

What to check before buying

  • Are winter sports included (not excluded)?
  • Is off-piste riding covered?
  • What is the cap for helicopter rescue?
  • What is the cap for medical expenses abroad?
  • Is medical repatriation included?
  • Is there an excess (deductible)?
  • Are there exclusions for alcohol or drugs?
  • How does the claims process work?

In case of an accident: what to do

  1. Call emergency services immediately (112)
  2. Keep all medical documents and receipts
  3. Document the circumstances of the accident (photos, witness details)
  4. Contact your insurer as soon as possible
  5. Do not sign anything without consulting your insurer
