Obereggen / Latemar

Obereggen is one of those places that Italian riders know well but find hard to explain to anyone who has never been. It is small — just 40km of pistes — but it has a snowpark that resorts ten times its size would envy. Located in the Latemar ski area in South Tyrol, part of the Dolomiti Superski circuit, Obereggen has established itself as a national reference for freestyle thanks to a snowpark that puts quality before quantity.

The Obereggen Snowpark

The Obereggen Snowpark is the primary reason many snowboarders choose this destination. It is not the biggest in Italy but it is arguably among the best-maintained: snow shapers work every morning on the features with a meticulous care that you can feel underboard. The jib area is the standout — creative boxes and rails, unusual elements, configurations that change throughout the season so regular riders never get bored. The kickers are precise and progressive, from small to medium with clean transitions. The three lines genuinely cover all levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced are not marketing labels but reflect real differences in difficulty.

Pistes and Freeride

The Latemar ski area delivers a solid all-mountain experience for its size. The pistes are well-groomed, with good red runs and a few blacks that offer rhythm and speed. The snowmaking infrastructure is among the best in South Tyrol, meaning early opening in November and reliable snow through April. For serious freeride, Obereggen is not the first choice, but the off-piste terrain accessible from the upper lifts does offer some opportunities for curious riders after fresh snowfall.

Getting There

Obereggen is easily reached from Bolzano, which sits on the A22 Brenner motorway. The SAD bus from Bolzano train station takes about 45 minutes and runs regularly throughout winter — one of the simplest logistics in the Italian Alps. Travellers from the north can fly into Bolzano airport. Parking near the lifts is convenient, though on weekends it is worth arriving early.

Obereggen is the choice of the rider who knows what they are looking for: long park sessions on features in perfect condition, a resort size that allows quick laps without wasting time in queues, and the option to stay in Bolzano in the evening and enjoy the city. If you are a freestyler who wants to maximise time on features rather than waiting at lift lines, Obereggen is a serious answer.
