Capracotta
Molise
Slope breakdown
Capracotta is one of Italy’s snowiest villages — a remote hilltop town in the Molise Apennines that receives some of the heaviest natural snowfall in the entire country, particularly in January. The alpine ski area is tiny: 2 lifts and about 5 km of pistes. But the Prato Gentile cross-country centre is nationally recognised, with 30 km of groomed trails that have hosted national and international competitions. This is authentic, uncrowded mountain Molise.
Why Go Snowboarding
Capracotta is not a snowboard destination in the conventional sense. There’s no park, the lift infrastructure is minimal, and services are basic. What it offers instead is genuine natural snowfall, complete solitude, and a high plateau with terrain that rewards self-sufficient riders comfortable moving off-piste. After a heavy snowfall, the open slopes and beech forests around the village provide excellent untracked snow with zero competition. For a rider who values quiet over convenience, Capracotta is a hidden gem.
Terrain & Slopes
The alpine area spans 1,380m to 1,650m with about 305m of vertical. The Monte Caruso and Valle della Canna are the tougher runs; Pianoro suits beginners. 5 km of marked pistes total, served by 2 lifts. The Prato Gentile cross-country centre has 30 km of trails at various levels — ideal for mixed groups including non-snowboarders.
Getting There
Capracotta requires a car: from Isernia, take the SS17 towards Carovilli then the provincial road (about 30 km, 40 minutes). From Naples: approximately 150 km via A1 and SS85. The nearest train station is Isernia (30 km), but onward transport without a car is very limited. Free parking at the lift base.
Tips
Always verify that lifts are open before travelling — with only 2 installations, a technical closure means no alpine skiing. Services on-site are minimal: bring what you need. At €25 for a day pass, it’s among the cheapest ski areas in Italy. The experience here is about authenticity and snowfall, not facilities. Naples Airport is about 2 hours away by car.
