Campitello Matese

Campitello Matese is Molise’s highest ski resort, sitting on the Matese massif below Monte Miletto (2,050m) near the Molise-Campania border. With 19 km of pistes, 6 lifts, and a day pass at €28, it’s one of the most affordable ski areas in Italy. Crowds are virtually non-existent, views from the summit take in Vesuvius, the Gulf of Naples, Ischia, Capri and the Adriatic, and the mountain atmosphere is entirely authentic.

Campitello Matese is for riders who value quiet over facilities. No park, modest vertical, basic services — but the Del Caprio and Cristallo runs offer decent terrain with good snow when the season cooperates, and the complete absence of queues means you can lap the lift all day without waiting. Freeride potential on the Matese slopes after snowfall is the main draw for more experienced riders. The cross-country area is growing, making it useful for mixed groups. At €28 for a full day, the price-to-experience ratio is unique in Italian skiing.

Terrain & Slopes

The ski area sits between 1,417m and 1,827m, with 19 km of pistes across all levels. Four chairlifts — including one reaching Col Caprio at the highest point — plus three surface lifts serve the slopes. Del Caprio and Cristallo are the main runs. On clear days the panorama from the top is extraordinary: Gulf of Naples, Vesuvius, Ischia, Capri and the Adriatic Sea all visible simultaneously.

Getting There

From Naples: A1 motorway, exit Caianello, then SS372 Telesina towards Campobasso, take the exit for San Massimo — approximately 120 km in 1h30. From Rome: about 250 km via A1 and A24. A car is essential — there are virtually no public transport connections. The nearest train stations are Campobasso (60 km) and Isernia (50 km). Free parking at the lift base.

Tips

With only 6 lifts, verify opening status before travelling — any maintenance closure significantly reduces the skiable area. Services on-site are minimal; bring what you need for the day. At €28 for a day pass, this is outstanding value. The combination of Molise’s genuine mountain character, extreme value pricing and zero crowds makes Campitello Matese a worthwhile detour for adventurous riders exploring southern Italy.
