Madesimo

Madesimo is one of Lombardy’s most underrated ski resorts, tucked deep in the Valchiavenna at over 1,500 m altitude. With 100% snowmaking coverage and reliable snow throughout the season, it delivers a solid, varied snowboard experience — from the infamous Canalone (northern Italy’s most technical piste) to the halfpipe at the Acquarela snowpark.

Why Go Snowboarding

Madesimo wins on the combination of technical terrain, a well-kept freestyle park, and an authentic mountain-village feel without the crowds of Courmayeur or Madonna di Campiglio. The Canalone is the resort’s iconic run: 36% average gradient, 3 km long, north-facing so it holds powder well. For freeriders, guided heliski excursions from the Valchiavenna into glaciated terrain offer a serious upgrade at some of the most accessible prices in Italy.

Terrain & Slopes

The 60 km of pistes spread across 39 runs: 20 blue, 16 red and 3 black. The concentration of intermediate-to-advanced terrain makes it well-suited to carving sessions on fast reds. The Valle Sasso sector is quieter and scenic, while the upper slopes towards Pizzo Groppera (2,900 m) deliver excellent snow quality throughout the season. The resort is integrated into the Skiarea Valchiavenna circuit, which also includes Campodolcino.

Snowpark

The Acquarela park at 1,800 m is Madesimo’s freestyle highlight. The halfpipe (130 m long, 20 m wide, 4.5 m walls) is one of the few in northern Italy meeting international standards. The park also includes three progressive jumps, a rainbow rail, a box and four additional rails. Access is easy and the park is shaped regularly throughout the season.

Getting There

Car: From Milan, A9 to Como, then SS36 Valchiavenna to Chiavenna, then SP7 to Madesimo (approx. 2h30). Train: Chiavenna station (approx. 30 km), then bus or taxi. Bus: Seasonal services from Milan and Como.

Tips

Best conditions are December–March, with January and February offering the most reliable snow. Madesimo is compact and easy to navigate — ideal for a no-fuss snowboard weekend. Dining in the village is authentic and reasonably priced compared to larger resorts. Evening skiing is available on the Pianello/Montalto piste.
