Terminillo

Terminillo is Rome’s mountain. Less than 130 km from the capital and reachable in under two hours, it has been the weekend snow escape for Romans since the 1930s. The resort peaks at 2,108m, has 30 km of slopes across three sectors, 13 lifts, and a small snowboard area with halfpipe near Cardito Sud. It’s not a destination that will challenge experienced riders — it’s a solid, accessible resort built on proximity to one of the world’s largest cities.

Why Go Snowboarding

Terminillo makes sense if you’re based in Rome and want a snow day without a long drive. The Terminilluccio sector offers the steepest terrain — 6 reds, 3 blues and 1 black, with three runs approved for international competitions. The snowboard area near Cardito Sud has a 200m slope with basic rails, boxes and a halfpipe — adequate for beginners and those brushing up fundamentals. The 26 km of cross-country trails on the Cinque Confini plateau (including a lit night track) add value for mixed groups.

Terrain & Slopes

Three zones: Carbonaie, Cardito Sud and Terminilluccio. Total of 30 km of downhill slopes between 1,500m and 2,108m. Snow conditions depend heavily on natural snowfall — only 9 snow cannons covering 3 km of pistes. When it snows well, Terminillo delivers; in dry winters it can struggle. The season runs mid-December to mid-March.

Snowpark

A 200-metre snowboard slope near Cardito Sud with basic rails, boxes and a halfpipe. Entry-level setup — suitable for beginners or warming up freestyle technique. The adjacent snowtubing run is popular with families.

Getting There

From Rome: Grande Raccordo Anulare (ring road) exit for SS4 Salaria, follow to Rieti, then SS521 to Terminillo — about 130 km, 1h45 in normal traffic. Coach from Rome Tiburtina (about 2 hours). Train to Rieti (30 km), then bus or taxi to the resort. Paid parking at the various resort zones.

Tips

Weekend conditions can be chaotic — Romans drive up en masse even with limited snow. Check how many pistes are open before committing to the trip. The best experience is midweek after heavy snowfall. Rieti (30 km) offers good accommodation at reasonable prices and solid local cuisine. The short season (mid-December to mid-March) means you need to plan ahead.
