Roccaraso / Aremogna

Roccaraso — nicknamed the “Cortina of the South” — is Italy’s largest ski resort south of the Alps. The Alto Sangro ski area delivers 90 km of connected pistes, 24 lifts, and two snowparks within two hours of Rome. It’s the go-to winter destination for central and southern Italians, with a lively resort atmosphere, good restaurants, and a committed local snowboard community.

Why Go Snowboarding

For snowboarders living in Rome or southern Italy, Roccaraso is the most serious resort within reach. The terrain spans three distinct zones — Aremogna, Pizzalto and Monte Pratello — each with its own character, requiring at least two days to explore properly. The Aremogna area has wide, fast pistes perfect for big, carving turns; Pizzalto delivers the steepest runs including blacks down to the valley. Two snowparks add freestyle options. After heavy snowfall, the forest terrain between sectors yields surprisingly good powder lines.

Terrain & Slopes

The resort runs from 1,310m to 2,141m — an 831m vertical drop. 90 km of pistes cover all levels: 45 km of blue runs for beginners and families, 25 km of red pistes, and around 20 km of black terrain on the Toppe del Tesoro and Pizzalto flanks. 24 lifts with a combined capacity of 31,400 riders per hour. 165 snow cannons ensure reliable coverage throughout the season.

Snowpark

Aremogna Park offers jumps, rails and freestyle features for intermediate to advanced riders, with some beginner-friendly structures. Pesco Snowpark near the Pescocostanzo lifts is a more compact alternative served by the Valle Gelata chairlift. Quality is solid for a southern Apennine resort.

Getting There

From Rome: A25 motorway (Rome–Pescara), exit Roccaraso — 180 km in about 2 hours. From Naples: A1 then A25, approximately 220 km, 2h30. Buses from Rome Tiburtina (approx. 2h30) with Flixbus and TUA Abruzzo. Train from Rome to Castel di Sangro takes about 4 hours; then 15 km by car or taxi to Roccaraso.

Tips

Weekends between December and February can be very crowded — arriving Friday evening and making the most of Saturday morning is the smart move. Roccaraso village has good Abruzzese restaurants for the evening. Weekly apartment rates in low season are affordable. The resort’s 165 snow cannons keep conditions manageable even in dry winters.
