Ovindoli

Ovindoli – Monte Magnola is the snowboarder-friendly Abruzzo resort closest to Rome, at about 130 km from the city. Its north-facing slopes give it one of the longest seasons in the central Apennines — up to 150 days from December through to early May — and a free snowpark makes it a popular choice for budget-conscious riders doing regular day trips from the capital.

Why Go Snowboarding

The north-facing orientation keeps snow quality high later into the season than most Apennine resorts. With 30 km of pistes, 11 lifts and a free snowpark, there’s enough on offer for regular visits without it feeling repetitive. The Pistone — a 4 km black run with 800m of vertical drop from the summit to the valley — is the standout descent. A modern 8-person gondola and a 6-seat chairlift minimise queuing. The “Le Tre Nevi” circuit connects Ovindoli with Campo Imperatore and Campo Felice for extended multi-resort skiing.

Terrain & Slopes

The resort runs from 1,450m to 2,220m across 21 pistes totalling around 30 km. The Pistone (nearly 4 km, 800m vertical) is the signature run. Blue pistes in the lower valley serve beginners and families; reds and blacks dominate the upper mountain. Night skiing on the Dolce Vita and Topolino slopes is available — rare for an Apennine resort. The 6 modern snow groomers maintain excellent piste quality.

Snowpark

The No.1 Snowpark has free entry and is split into two zones: Upper-Park at 1,980m with more technical features, and Lower-Park on the Dolce Vita slope at 1,650m, with 9 total features of various types and sizes. A carpet lift handles the uphill. One of the few genuinely free parks in central-southern Italy.

Getting There

From Rome: A24 motorway, exit Tagliacozzo, then SS5 to Ovindoli — 130 km in about 1h30. From L’Aquila: about 50 km via SS696. Seasonal buses from Rome Tiburtina (about 1h45) and L’Aquila. Train to Avezzano (25 km), then bus or taxi. Car parks near the lifts.

Tips

The north-facing aspect means colder days — layer up even in spring. The €35 day pass is very competitive. The “Le Tre Nevi” multi-resort pass covers Ovindoli, Campo Imperatore and Campo Felice. Avezzano (25 km) has solid Abruzzese restaurants at very affordable prices. The long season makes late-spring riding possible in good snow years.
